Wood carvings

October 13, 2013
Well it has been a full year now that I have started with carving/working with wood.  I love it.  There is so much that anyone can do with this beautiful medium.  I have done several projects now.  Including 3 wonderful walking sticks, 4 wood burning, a relief carving, and I am even thinking of learning to chip carve.
I was so happy to try competing in a couple of shows. One Great Day of Carving... sponsored by Woodcraft, in Ventura, CA.  I won two 3rd place ribbons for my Hummingbirds and Roses walking stick, and the Out On  A Limb relief carving.  WOW, what a great learning experience.. They were judged by a CCG (California Carvers Guild) panel.  I learned where I made mistakes. The second show was at the 31st Annual Ventura County Fair.  I won 1st place for the Hummingbird and Roses Walking stick!  I was able to ship it home to its rightful and proud owner, Pat Sisk, my Dad.
Lately, I have been busy with a couple of canes, and walking sticks for customers.,  I did a See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil cane in Willow, with a hand carved banana on top for the handle.  It has sold for $100.00.  And will be doing another for someone else this week.  I am also doing a Disney's Grumpy on Diamond Willow for the Manager at Ralph's grocery store here in Ventura.
It has been a great pleasure to be able to go down to the beach on weekends and carve and meet new people...and SHOW off, and gain new friendships and customers for my work.

Folks, fans.. I know I don't blog all that often, but I will try to keep you posted with pictures at my Facebook SculpturesbyScott page.

Until the next time.. happy carving and creating for all. Peace

Scott

Aspen Walking Stick

January 30, 2013
Well, in the beginning of January, I started a new project.  It is a 5' Aspen walking stick, and I am carving...both power(w/ Dremel) and by knife the theme of Hummingbirds and roses.  This will be a gift for my Dad, but I am going to enter it into the Ventura County Fair in July 2013.  It is very detailed on the upper portion, and I am adding a piece of Purpleheart wood to the top of the stick in the shape of a rose.  I have been told that I should paint it..(the entire project)  and I am co...

Owl Pyography

December 13, 2012
Well my friends, I started new medium in wood crafting and I absolutely love it!  It is pyrography, which in layman terms is simply wood burning.  I bought a inexpensive wood burning kit from local Harbor Freight & Tool store for $10.00. I also studied a book put out by Sue Walters and I completed my first project for beginners. It was a Western Wood Owl sitting on a tree stump. The panel used was a 12"x 12" Birch plywood. I then sketched out the remaining background in pencil from my own desi...

Wood Carvings

November 1, 2012
Hello my friends,

I started to carve in wood just recently, and I really enjoy the new medium.  I had no idea that there was so many different techniques a person could do.  I have been attending a class at the local High School, and became a member of the California Carvers Association.  I am currently working on a small project for a Christmas gift.. it is titled Owl.  I also am looking to get into pyrography soon.  Looking forward to posting new pics soon here.

Peace my friends.
